The Bridge Network is a group of privately practicing Australian psychologists working together to provide services, billed directly to Medicare, to people who have just been released from prison or who are on a community based order. Any person charged with or convicted of an offence is eligible for this service.
If you go and see a general practitioner when you are released, you will be able to ask for a GP Mental Health Care Plan Item 2710 and a referral letter which will enable us to bulk bill your fees for six sessions of counselling to Medicare. The Medicare rebates now cover drug, alcohol and sexual problems, as well as depression and anxiety. Anger problems are often a symptom of depression or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Many people experience very high levels of anxiety when they are released from prison.
You will need to talk to your doctor about all of the problems you have. After completing six sessions, you will need to return to the doctor with a brief report from the psychologist to ask for an Item 2712 review. You may then get another six sessions of counselling. This can be repeated if there are any changes in your condition or your circumstances and a third set of six sessions is considered to be necessary. You are able to access up to eighteen counselling sessions in twelve months through Medicare and we look forward to hearing from you.
Here are the contact details for the psychologists we know who are willing to bulk bill for people who have been convicted of an offence. Please ask the psychologist for the bulk billing.
